Misael Nunez and family tended to a last minute details from tent lighting to vine trimming and receiving a load of fireworks Wednesday as they prepared a place for a party to celebrate the Fourth of July behind their restaurant, Tres Hermanos Nunez in Grayson.
"I do this for the community and I guess to have fun," Misael said after climbing down from a ladder beneath a big tent to inspect a load of pyrotechnics which had just arrived. Misael usually handles the fireworks himself, he explained, although this year he is bringing in a pro to tend the fuses. "If it is good, you can blame me," he said with a hearty laugh.
Nunez points to a nearby house where his family first lived in Grayson, and explained his family and staff host the July 4 celebration as a way of giving back to their neighbors. "Way back, we started little and every year we try to do it bigger and bigger," he said.
With a grin, he admits he does not know how many people they will be cooking for Thursday. "We will be doing it for free and we will have hamburgers and hot dogs and our famous chicken deluxe," he said, shrugging as he estimated, "We will try for a thousand (people) but who knows?" If it does not rain, Nunez said he wants to build a wood fire and cook everything in traditional Mexican style.
Local residents are invited to drop by after 6pm, with fireworks shortly after dark. Nunez said he will provide music for the evening, as well as authentic Mexican Jaritos sodas in flavors including pineapple, strawberry and grapefruit.
Tres Hermanos Nunez is located at 502 East Main Street, Grayson. For more information (or to place an order) call (606) 474-6631.
