TRAFFIC ADVISORY: KY 1 Closed August 19 at Lost Creek in Greenup County

Contractors to set 35-ton bridge beams Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Aug. 13, 2020) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will temporarily close KY 1 near KY 784 in Greenup County next Wednesday, Aug. 19, so contractors can safely set concrete beams in place on the Lost Creek bridge replacement project.

Work on the $900,000 Bridging Kentucky project began earlier this month, and includes rebuilding the old bridge – working one lane at a time – just south of the KY 784 intersection (milepoint 1.1) by constructing a new, longer-lasting structure.

Currently, the KY 1 bridge over Lost Creek is one lane, controlled by temporary signals, but must be closed to all traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19, so a crane can set 35-ton concrete beams across the creek. There is not enough room to safely maintain traffic alongside the crane and beam-setting operations.

The KY 1 bridge will reopen to one-lane traffic after 5 p.m. Severe weather could postpone the work and road closure. Motorists should watch electronic message boards for updates.

The project is being done by the Frederick and May Construction Company under a $927,412.60 low-bid Transportation Cabinet contract through the Bridging Kentucky program.

The Bridging Kentucky program is a commitment to improving safety and soundness of the Commonwealth’s bridges by rehabilitating, repairing, or replacing critical bridges throughout the state. The program is designed to open closed structures, improve bridge lifespans, ensure appropriate weight capacities are met, and improve access and mobility for all Kentuckians.
