Grayson: "March For Change" - Garrett Back Among Protesters (Sunday, August 16, 2020)

Small crowds of protesters, counter protesters and what appeared to be drive-by tourists with cell phone video cameras rolling gathered in Grayson once again Sunday, August 16, 2020.

Controversial organizer Dee Garrett was back among the protesters following a weekend hiatus last Sunday due to his arrest in Louisville. Garrett told The Carter County Post he is no longer associated with the Black Lives Matter movement, citing incidents he witnessed while in Louisville.

A march was scheduled as part of the afternoon demonstration, although the group of approximately 30-40 protesters remained largely beneath or near the picnic shelter between a small park and the municipal building. Protesters used a pair of charcoal grills to cook food, which they offered to counter protesters in hopes of encouraging dialogue.

At least two or three counter protesters joined the small crowd at the picnic shelter with a specific goal of protecting the group's right to peaceful assembly, even though they disagree with the movement and message.

Garrett was among those seen inviting those with opposing opinions to join himself and others, although many simply turned their back on him. Several counter protesters, many with a stated purpose of being present to protect the city in case of rioting or violence, did join the group for the cookout meal.

Most of the counter protesters were once again armed and often gathered in small clusters. Many seemed to take up stations along Main Street and surrounding areas. Reports of "a bunch of Antifa on their way" were often repeated during the first hour of Sunday's protest.
