The summertime is a busy time for 4-H members. 4-H Summer Camp, Kids Can Cook, 4-H Craft Day, Teen Conference and even a 4-H Aerospace Day Camp were all on the calendar for local 4-H members.
In addition to these events, Carter County 4-H members excelled in numerous contests throughout the summer.
Livestock club members have participated in skillathons and district livestock shows to qualify for the State Fair. They also competed in the Carter County Fair 4-H/FFA Youth Livestock Shows.
Horse club members had the opportunity to compete in the district horse show and state horse contests. Alyssa Holbrook earned a 4th place ribbon in the equipment category for the bridle and reins she made for the State Horse Contest. Kenzie Owens competed in the photography, crafts, and public speaking contests. Owens placed 6th in the senior speaking contest and 6th in the pattern craft category.
Carter County Sharpshooter members Caleb Sexton, Cole Sexton, Garrett Middleton, Brandon Rice, Mack McGlone, and Will Middleton have participated in several trap meets. At the May Rowan County Trap Meet, Mack McGlone placed 1st in the 12-14 age division; Cole Sexton placed 2nd in the 15-18 age division and Will Middleton placed 3rd in the 15-18 age division. The 4-H State Communication Day contests were held on the University of Kentucky campus on July 13th. The District Tractor & Lawn Mower Driving contests were held on July 29th at the Greenup County Extension Office. Carter County participants included Gerald Flaugher (Tractor – Champion; Lawn Mower – Reserve Champion), Cheron Flaugher (Lawn Mower – Red), and Jennings Ewing (Lawn Mower – Red; Tractor – White).
