Nancy Akers Kiser, formerly of Grayson, KY, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at Windsor Care Center in Mount Sterling, KY. She was four days short of her 90th birthday. Nancy was born in the coal fields of Floyd County, Ky in the city of Auxier, on June 6, during the depression and drought of 1930.
She attended her first two years of school at Van Lear Elementary, in Johnson County, KY. Her family then moved to Iron Hill, KY to a big mountaintop farm that is now known as Springhill Dairy Farm. She attended a one-room school at Iron Hill until she went to high school.
She graduated from Carter High School, and went to Berea College, but finished her studies at Morehead State University, with a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s equivalent in Early Childhood Education with an emphasis on preschool.
She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse at Rattlesnake Ridge, then taught at Hitchins Elementary for a short time, and finished her teaching career at Carter Elementary where she taught kindergarten, fourth grade, and home bound. She retired from teaching after 20 years and spent her time enjoying her children, writing hymns and children’s stories, and oil painting.
She was an excellent cook, as was her mother. She enjoyed playing organ and piano from time to time at Bagby Methodist Church in Grayson, where she was a member. She also played piano for the residents of Windsor Care Center on a regular basis.
She is survived by one daughter, Cassandra “Sandy” Jude (Lowell) Winchester, KY, four sons, Randy Kiser of Carter, KY, Kim Kiser of Olive Hill, KY, Michael Kiser (Leigh) of Rockmart, GA, Steve Kiser (Marsha) of Mantachie, MS and a son-in-law, Ike Oakley of Olive Hill, KY. She had fourteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She also leaves behind a beloved sister-in-law, Donna Lou Akers; her oldest and dearest friend, Flora Gibson McDavid, and several neices and nephews.
She was the last surviving child of Norman and Flossie Marshall Akers who preceded her in death, along with a beloved daughter, Belinda Oakley, two sisters, Barbara Huffman (Ralph) and Joann McDavid Hall, two brothers, Don Akers (Myrtle) and Eugene Akers, and the father of her children, Bradley Kiser.
Funeral services will be Saturday, June 6, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. at the Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson, Bill Burnett, minister. Burial will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Grayson.
Visitation will be Friday, June 5, 2020 at 6:00p.m.- 8:00p.m. at the Sparks Funeral Home.
