A small crowd gathered at Veterans Park in downtown Grayson Saturday afternoon to honor local military veterans who were killed in action while serving their country.
The program began with an opening prayer by Denver Prater, who served with the U.S. Army during the war in Vietnam, followed by a recording of The Star Spangled Banner as performed by the U.S. Army Field Band and Chorus.
State Senator Robin Webb provided opening remarks which included her own memories of local residents who gave their lives while serving with America's military. Mandel Smith, who also served with the U.S. Army during the war in Vietnam explained the significance of items on a small table near the podium as part of a traditional "Missing Man" ceremony.
Participants read the name of every Carter County native who died during their service to America, as well as their rank and military branch.
Smith and Prater teamed up for a presentation of a memorial wreath following a rendition of Battle Hymn of The Republic by the U.S. Army Field Band and Chorus. Sissel's rendition of "Going Home" was played prior to Prater providing the closing prayer.
West Carter High School student Evan Barney brought an emotional end to the program when he walked into the center of the memorial-brick circle at Veterans Park, lifted his horn and performed "Taps."
Veterans Park in Grayson is supported and maintained by funds from Carter County Veterans Bingo.
