Iron Hill Memories: Class of 1942 Stitched In Time (more than 30 photos)

A pair of perfectly preserved, hand-stitched quilts on display inside a downtown Grayson business are sure to spark memories for people with connections to the Iron Hill community.

In 1942, students of teacher Mary Enna Davis at Iron Hill Elementary stitched their names into individual blocks of each quilt.

The teacher kept the quilts until her death, when they went into the arms of her former neighbor and caretaker who is a friend of Pam Howard, owner of Walking On Sunshine Wellness Spa & Shoppe. Howard said she immediately recognized some of the names.

“I recognized Flora Edith Gibson, who is a member of our Iron Hill Church Of Christ, and our youngest son’s (Kooper Watts Howard) namesake – Howard Watts Davis,” she said, marveling at the collection of names and memories stitched into the fabric.

“I just want people to be able to see them,” Howard said, explaining her plan to display each of the two quilts at her shop, which recently relocated to the corner of Hord and Main Streets in down Grayson.
