"We will again have the West Carter and East Carter FFA students with a farm petting zoo," said All Creatures founder Donald "Doc" Gibson, who noted the local students will offer hands-on experiences with traditional farm animals including horses, sheep. goats and rabbits. Free pony rides will also be available throughout the afternoon, Gibson said.
"The FFA kids will also cook," Gibson said, emphasizing all food and drinks are provided at no charge.
Exotic animals, from Honey Hill Farms, awaiting visits will include one or more camels, a kangaroo, a giant tortoise and a Patagonian Cavy.
Representatives of the Carter County Animal Shelter and Ashland Area Rescue Fund will have pets ready for adoption, Gibson said.
The clinic's distributors and suppliers "all get excited about this too," the local veterinarian said, explaining they provided a bounty of items including flea control products and other accessories as door prizes for Friday's open house.
In addition to a meal and a chance to visit with animals, Gibson said many guests enjoy a chance to see "behind the scenes" at the clinic, as well as the opportunity to meet the people who help care for their pets.
"The tours are pretty popular. Parents like to show the kids where their dog had surgery," he said with a chuckle.
Gibson said he and his staff look forward to the chance to open their facility to guests. "It is a fun day. We like to give back to the community."
The open house will be held from 2 to 6 p.m., Friday, September 6.
