Great Things Ahead: Olive Hill Chamber of Commerce

Audra Foltz from Women of Valor

Hello everyone. I (Lisa Conley) wanted to give an update on last night’s meeting and give some information on two big anniversary ribbon cuttings!

We want to welcome a returning member and a new member to the chamber! Walker’s Restaurant, owned and operated by Carl Bustetter has rejoined. We are thrilled and look forward to working with him. Welcome back!

We also welcomed new member, Trinity Sisters Design, owned and operated by Lincoln and Christy Stamper to the chamber. Trinity Sisters Design currently operate out of their home and will be opening a new business in downtown Olive Hill in the near future. We look forward to hosting a ribbon cutting for them then!

JD Rayburn is continuing to work on necessary steps for the business directional sign and Von Perry has given permission for the chamber to put one in her yard (she lives one mile from interstate on Rt 2 and her driveway is often used as a turn-around from those who obviously are uncertain of how far it is to town….we plan to fix that!). If your business would like to be included on these directional signs please contact JD at Scenic Hills Realty.

We have memorabilia being sent to us from Tom T Hall, Alma Sturgill (for Darvin), Hammertowne, and Sasha Colette currently for our Welcome Center.

We still have a few people to reach out to. Our current need is display cases for this memorabilia and also brochures, menus, etc from our businesses to be able to have on hand for anyone who comes into the Welcome Center once it opens. Debbie Rayburn (Scenic Hills Realty) is heading up the decorating of the new center so if you are interested in helping then please contact her.

Audra Foltz from Women of Valor gave a wonderful talk last night and we appreciate all she and Women of Valor does for our community. That is why we named her as our Volunteer of the Month. Go Radio (WGOH/WUGO) was named our Member of the Month and is well deserved!

We have two 40 yr anniversary ribbons cuttings (yes, you read that correctly) upcoming this month. On Saturday, Sept 21st at 5:25 PM (meet at 5:15 PM) we will be at James Do-It-Best Hardware just prior to their Customer Appreciation Gospel Sing and on Saturday, Sept. 28th at 1:55 PM (meet at 1:45 PM) we will be at Globe Funeral Chapel just prior to their Anniversary Celebration.

Please make plans to come out and support these two wonderful businesses!

I am still working on a couple of other ribbon cuttings for new businesses in Olive Hill. Circumstances have prevented those from happening just yet. These will be announced just as soon as everything is worked out.

We are hosting a FREE movie night on Saturday, Oct. 19th at the Depot. The movie will be “Hocus Pocus” and we will be having a costume contest (come dressed as your favorite character from Hocus Pocus). Judging will take place at 7:15 PM.

The Drive-In will have the food truck on site starting at 6 PM so food and drinks will be available for purchase. This is an outdoor event so bring a lawn chair and/or blanket. In the event of inclement weather we will move inside the Depot.

The chamber is also hosting a store/window decorating contest! We want to see Olive Hill decorated in your best Fall or Halloween decor!

You can decorate just your windows or go all out and decorate your store! We will have a few different categories (to be announced soon) but one we agreed upon last night is going to be “People’s Choice”.

Voters will have to come into your place of business to cast their vote (thank for the idea Carl)! The chamber will provide canisters and stamped voting papers (non-stamped votes will not be counted) to any business who is entering. Please let me know if you plan to participate. We ask that your business be decorated by our Hocus Pocus movie night (Oct. 19th). Winners will be announced during the awards ceremony at “It’s Fall Y’all!” on Oct. 26th.

Small Business Saturday is coming up on November 30th and the Biz Wiz is making plans to hit the streets again this year to promote our local businesses! We will be doing a savings flyer again to hand out to patrons encouraging them to come into your place of business to shop!

We will once again be giving away hot chocolate, hot apple cider, and homemade goodies. If you want to be included on this year’s savings flyer or want more information contact me.

Lastly, if you would like to serve on the nominating committee for 2020 chamber officers, please make plans to attend our October monthly meeting. That meeting will be held on Oct 17th at 5:30 PM in the Tea Room of the Historical Society. Dinner will be provided.

Max Hammond asked Chamber members to think of ways to have someone available to answer telephone inquiries from businesses interested in possibly setting up shop in Olive Hill.
