August 28th, 2019 marked graduation for the sixth and latest Carter County Leadership Academy class.
The Leadership Academy was organized by the Carter County Community Partner’s organization, and the Academy has now graduated 43 students.
The Leadership Academy graduated four students this year: Christopher Prince, a student at East Carter High School; Jeremy D. Wells, Journalist for the Grayson Journal-Enquirer; Derrick Hay, an employee at Commercial Bank; and Amy Sapp, also an employee at Commercial Bank.
The graduates all worked throughout the sesssions on a community project. Jeremy Wells project is organizing a Youth Poetry Slam with hopes of growing it into a yearly competition between East and West Carter High Schools (pictured above is Jeremy giving his final presentation the project).
Chris Prince was not in attendance for today’s presentation, but prepared a Youtube video to explain. Prince is working on a Youth Substance Abuse Session. This is focusing on prevention of e-cigarette use at the student level.
Lastly, Derrick Hay and Amy Sapp joined forces to work on Reading Exchange Boxes for Carter County. This will include building attractive storage boxes for books to be borrowed from and returned to in the communities. This was described by Hay as a “blessing box, but for books”. The first box will be going up in the Hitchins area soon, with an Olive Hill location soon to follow.
