Melissa's Cocina: New buffet and grill opens today

Grayson’s newest restaurant, Melissa’s Cocina, opens to the public at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 17, in the former Shoney’s location on C.W. Stevens Boulevard.

“It is not really a Mexican buffet – it is going to be a lot of variety,” said spokesman Bill Robinson Tuesday evening as invited guests enjoyed repeated trips to the salad bar, hot bar and desserts following a ribbon cutting earlier in the day.

“There will be some Mexican. There will be some Italian. They’ve got spaghetti and meatballs up there right now I think,” Robinson said, noting the restaurant will offer diners 18 hot items, in addition to a salad and fruit selection as well as a choice of desserts. The sweets will include traditional Mexican baked goods including Pan Dulce and Tres Leche, he said.

Owner Misael Nunez added the new restaurant will also serve desserts including a “Mexican doughnut with ice cream,” and specialties including a banana chimichanga.

The buffet will be priced according to time and day, with the lunch buffet set at $8.99, week night and Sunday dinners for $10.99, and $12.99 for Friday and Saturday evenings when the buffet will include entrees such as prime rib and ribeye steak.

The former Shoney’s location does have a bar built in, but Robinson said they have not yet made a decision about serving alcohol there. “Probably, eventually? We haven’t had time to think about it,” he said.

Melissa’s Cocina, which translates to Melissa’s Kitchen, will be open from 11 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 11 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
