CHIPS is a local nonprofit that stands for Carter County Home Improvement Projects. Jackie Clevenger stated Carter County has a need for medium sized projects to be completed, but many local organizations would focus on large scale or very small projects.
CHIPS volunteers give back to the community by making various medium sized home repairs- with a focus on safety. Frequent repairs include roof replacement, flooring repairs, and handicap ramps on the homes of Carter County Citizens.
CHIPS volunteers this week is a group of Catholic teens from Canton, Massachusetts. These teens attend St. Gerard Majella Roman Catholic Church, and volunteer throughout the year to be eligible for this trip to Carter County, among other service oriented trips. Carter County Post was told only around 80 children are chosen to take trips per year from the over 110 applicants.
A group of around 8 teens were at this Rotary Club meeting and arrived in Carter County the night before. The project to be completed Monday was replacing a roof for a resident of Olive Hill.
A young adult representative from the church stated this church has been coming to Carter County, more specifically Olive Hill, for over 20 years. The representative stated she has been here 7 or 8 times herself.
